Shetland MSP, Tavish Scott, has written to the Scottish fire chief asking what they are doing to recruit more people to the service before a tragedy happens.
Crews from Lerwick and Scalloway attended ablaze at an unoccupied house in Hillswick on Wednesday afternoon, a distance of 35 miles. The two nearest fire stations, Hillswick and Brae, a mile and 16 miles away from the house respectively, were both unmanned due to full-time work commitments.
Tavish Scott said:
''While thankfully in this case there was no danger to life, this might not be the case in the future and therefore there is a pressing need for the fire service to tackle this need across Shetland. The face that residents in outlying parts of Shetland have to rely on fire crews from Central Shetland only increases the potential for a future tragedy.
''I would therefore ask that Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to do more in order to retain fire crews, in addition to attracting much needed recruits.
