Shetland MSP Tavish Scott has become Scottish Environment LINK’s Species Champion for the Orca.
Sightings of whales including orcas have been well-documented across Shetland this summer. As Species Champion, Tavish hopes to draw attention to the importance of the Orca by encouraging people to continue to report sightings.
The North Atlantic Killer Whale Project has identified 38 creatures around Shetland, Orkney and the north of Scotland.
Commenting, Tavish said:
“It has been a fantastic summer for whale-watching in the islands, with the Shetland Orca Sightings page on Facebook receiving hundreds of updates, videos and photos.
“I am delighted to be the Orca Champion in Parliament. While the peak season for sightings is now over, I look forward to working with Scottish Environment LINK to promote this fascinating animal over the coming years.”
