Despite Sumburgh Airport’s operator trying to impose car parking charges on islanders, they are now offering free parking at Inverness Airport.
HIAL, who operate airports on behalf of the Scottish Government, are offering free parking at Inverness Airport for flights to Jersey.
Shetland MSP Tavish Scott said, “HIAL are an incompetent organisation. They are not a fit organisation to run our airports. Their policy is to impose car parking charges at airports where there are no alternative to lifeline air travel. But at Inverness, where there are other travel options, they offer free parking. What a typical shambles.
“It is time the new SNP Transport Minister took responsibility for this carry on. Michael Matheson should instigate a full review, impact assessment and consultation on this shambles of a policy.
“Every day I hear the latest indication of HIAL twisting and turning to make up new rules on the so-called exemption criteria. Apparently they have now changed the form for residents in Shetland’s outer islands. HIAL just make this up as they go on. No planning. No thought. No common sense.
“Few islanders have any faith in this organisation. And the SNP Government have done absolutely nothing to help the islands. So much for the Islands Bill or islands proofing policy.”
